What this part is
On the iPhone XS you hear the other person through a small earpiece speaker at the top of the screen. Dust, liquid or a drop can make calls sound muffled, crackly or silent, while speakerphone still works.
This is the earpiece speaker on its own. It sits behind the display, so the screen has to come off to reach it. First try cleaning the mesh gently with a soft brush, as a blocked grille can also make calls quiet.

How to check your model
Open Settings › General › About and check the model name reads iPhone XS. Tap the model number to see the A-number. It should be one of A1920, A2097, A2098, A2099, A2100.
The iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch OLED screen and two rear cameras. The iPhone XS Max is larger, with a 6.5-inch screen.
Professional installation
How a technician fits this part
- Power the phone off and remove the pentalobe screws next to the port.
- Warm the screen edges, open the iPhone XS and disconnect the battery.
- Disconnect and remove the display to reach the top of the screen.
- Remove the earpiece bracket and swap the old speaker for the new one.
- Refit the display, reconnect the battery and test call audio.
- Apply new display adhesive and close the phone.
Check that the part matches the device before fitting it or removing any adhesive backing. Once a part has been fitted, it cannot be returned for a change of mind. Faulty parts are always covered.
